Asia (China in particular)'s high-end counterfeit market didn't really take off until early 2000s. That means from 1980s (when China barely just opened up its economy to the rest of the world) to late 1990s, there were fakes but not as massively and sophisticatedly made as the ones in 2000s. On the other side, newer handbags introduced post 2000s took the first hit by good replicas, including iconic styles from Mulberry, Chloé, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, that were so well made that some of them still circulate in the resale market almost a decade later.
Iconic Mulberry bags such as Alexa, Bayswater, and Roxanne actually have some of the best knock-offs that far rival those of more luxurious brands, partially because their original ones do not hold a very high quality standard. When the real ones are just so so, the fake ones can be not so bad.
Here we are taking a closer look at a fake Mulberry Alexa with side by side comparison with the real ones.
1. The Logo and Typeface
Good thing about Mulberry is, it hasn't changed its logo or font since it started getting popular, so the mulberry tree logo and typeface should not vary a lot for the past twenty years.
2. Buckle Engraving
We have to admit the engraving is well done but pay attention to how the hardware is finished and the thickness of the cylinder bar where the pin falls on is very different from the real one.
3. Magnet Button
Most designer accessories would use big hardware brands such as YKK, Lampo, Riri etc and they would rarely display visible random numbers on the outside.
4. Screw Finishing
While there is no universal rule on the screws used, based on my observation, more designer accessories tend to use flat screws over Phillips screws.
5. Handle Stitching
I have to say Mulberry does not make top quality bags and its stitching is always imperfect. However, the fake one at the top is just too bad to appeal.
The logo jacquard on the lining of the fake bag is obviously off.
7. Serial Number
As we all know that not all Mulberry bags come with serial numbers, the ones do, have few variations when it comes to how the serial numbers are printed as well as the typeface.
