Asia (China in particular)'s high-end counterfeit market didn't really take off until early 2000s. That means from 1980s (when China barely just opened up its economy to the rest of the world) to late 1990s, there were fakes but not as massively and sophisticatedly made as the ones in 2000s. On the other side, newer handbags introduced post 2000s took the first hit by good replicas, including iconic styles from Mulberry, Chloé, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, that were so well made that some of them still circulate in the resale market almost a decade later.
